On 30-31 July 2022, the “Islamic Thought and its Implications for Current Social Inquiry” project organized a conference entitled Towards a Multiplex Relational Theory of Action: Why Do People Do What They Do? The conference was held in person at the Suleymaniye Campus of Ibn Haldun University and was live-streamed on the university’s official youtube channel.

The welcome address of the event was delivered by Recep Senturk, the principal investigator of the project, and Alev Erkilet, the dean of the sociology department. The two-day conference hosted 7 panels featuring academics and scholars from different disciplines including philosophy, psychology, political science, sociology, anthropology and economics.

The classical disciplines of usul al-fiqh, kalam, and tasawuf were also discussed in relation to their perspectives on human action. Academics both from local (Universities of Istanbul Technical, 29 Mayis, Marmara, Boğaziçi and FSMV) and international universities such as Qatar and Hamad Bin Khalifa Universities (Qatar), Darussalam Gontor (Indonesia), Darul Qasim College and Standford University (U.S), WISE University (Jordan), al-Quds University (Palestine), Al Nafi (Pakistan) and Leiden University (Netherlands) made presentations and contributed to the discussion in the programme.

Another highlight of the conference was the student panel in which four selected students from Ibn Haldun and Bogazici universities presented their ongoing research before the audience of senior scholars and academics and received feedback.
