Strategic Expansion into European Research Networks: COST Training Held

Strategic Expansion into European Research Networks: COST Training Held
The “Strategic Expansion into European Research Networks through COST” training program was held in person on July 29, 2026, at our university’s Teoman Duralı Conference Hall, under the coordination of the Project Support Office and led by Prof. Dr. Mehmet KOKOÇ, a faculty member at Trabzon University.

The program addressed the structure of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Programme, which connects more than 40 national research systems, as well as its role within the European Research Area. It was emphasized that Türkiye, which has contributed to COST as a founding member since 1971, benefits from additional opportunities offered to researchers through its status as an Inclusiveness Target Country (ITC).

The program introduced the structure of COST Actions and the mechanisms of Working Groups and Management Committees. Participants were also informed that involvement in COST networks can serve as a gateway to international mobility opportunities, including Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSMs), early-career leadership experience, and major research funding programs such as Horizon Europe and the European Research Council (ERC).

During the afternoon session, a hands-on workshop was held with the participants. In the workshop entitled “Preparing an Application Text for Working Group Membership,” participants examined the Scientific Background, Motivation, and Working Group Contribution sections of applications submitted through the e-COST system using a real application example. They also had the opportunity to prepare drafts of their own applications. In addition, participants were guided in identifying networks relevant to their research fields by reviewing the updated list of 80 new COST Actions approved in May 2026.

Throughout the event, participants gained practical knowledge about the processes involved in joining COST networks and preparing a strong application, explored COST Actions aligned with their research interests, and had the opportunity to ask questions directly to an expert. The training is expected to encourage greater participation by our university’s academics in European research networks and to strengthen the culture of international collaboration.
